Another reason for a neutered boy to run away is when there is one or more territorial males bigger, fiercer fighter than him in the area, and they threaten to kill him or drive him out. This is very real, I have seen it happen to my boy (he was so terrorised and absolutely terrified, you can just see his haunting eyes!!) and you MUST do everything to protect him until he is full sized and fit and healthy so that he will not be afraid and be beaten and driven out of the area. Cats are territorial. The females once spayed are quite safe, but boys will always be challenged. That is why if we keep cats, we really need to understand the animal world so that we know what happens and what action to take is the best. When that cat is ours, or is loved by us, we need to understand how best to take care of it and what to do always as well as prepare for the unpredictable. That is why I always enjoy watching Discovery Channel and Animal Planet. You get to peek into their world and life and see things which otherwise you will never know or understand what is happening. They are animals, not humans. We must understand their ways and not expect them to be like us and think of them as "humans", rationalizing things and their actions as human beings. But so many cat owners have lost their cats and never really, really tried hard to find out what happened so that it never happens again to another cat of theirs. So very sad.
