It is normal for an adult or teenage cat to run far away from a small kitten (Nikko is only 2 weeks) as if it is a ghost, as if it expects a superfierce mommy cat (U don't mess with a female with babies to protect in the animal kingdom! - my "normally terrified of humans" Caroline stood up to 3 huge dogs to protect her young kid, would have been mauled to death if I hadn't been around to boost her defence!) to suddenly jump out the sky and bash them to death!
All my FurKids completely disappeared out of sight (they normally hang around the house), out of the house, out of the compound, when I brought 2 miserable kittens home. In the end, the babies had to be moved upstairs completely away from them. Only then, they came back home one by one. But sometimes U have the adult kill the babies, especially a male killing the babies of another male (this is common in the animal kingdom where the male ensures the survival of his own genes).
When a mother cat had a litter of small kittens in my back lane, all my FurKids (including all the male strays who normally roam and announce/advertise their machoness) also mysteriously stayed far away from it even though they themselves grew up and played there all their lives. I tried opening my back door and putting one FurKids at the back and she sprang back indoors as though hit by lightning. They behave as though the place is haunted!
So, my brain is also busy performing some mental acrobatics trying to figure out what is happening in their little brains during the encounter ...
Daian has given very good advice.
