Dear Izyandanial,
Yes sphynx are unique cats. Unique in feature, unique in behaviour. I must say here from my experience they are the most lovable cats I have ever had. Intelligent, mischievous among other characters. I always thought that looking after a long hair cat is difficult but hairless cats can be tricky. Their skin is so precious and the coat itself carries loads of points if you are thinking of showing your cat.
I waited 8 years prior to having a sphynx trying to understand them and only after owning one I truely understand the breed. As a person who likes oddness, I prefer sphynx. When thinks of a cat one will imagine hair, plenty of hair, far from hairlessness, but my baby sphynx has turn heads and having others look at him with amazement. Very agreeable to his surroundings and his companions, he also loves to show his differences to others. A curious breed and very active, a monkey at home.
Could you explain why would you like to have a sphynx and how many cats/pets do you own currently. How much time would you be able to spend for your sphynx on a daily basis as they need quite a bit of your time. Their coat needs to be wiped down twice a week and the ears cleaned every 3 days, and the nails need to be wiped as well every 2 days depending. These would of cocurse vary according to individual cat and its surrounding.
If you have read through sphynx articles and like what you are reading, take a visit to some local breeders and speak to them about the breed prior to getting one. There is usually a waiting list. Be familiarize with the breed. But rest assured, once you have a sphynx you would not want anything else.
As Ger has mentioned, do be careful of some Asian breeder. There are alot more healthy sphinxes around. There are also some BYB who only thinks of cash instead of the needs and health of their cats.
Personally, my best advice is to meet up with local breeders prior to your decision.
All the best.
