well, for me, i get rid of the stool everyday, then i just gemburkan the crystal / sand so that it absorb the pee evenly. i clean the pan every 7-10 days, meaning replacing the crystal / sand with a pan of fresh one. i dunno about others though. i only have one cat but he pees like an elephant, so unless i clean it often, the ammonium gas will kill him and all of us whole.
