Health issues - 'top' breeders
OK - I asked the question before in passing, but let's explore this one.
How many registered breeders on the forum test for the following (the most basic, to begin with) :
Persian/Exotic/British/Fold/Scottish SH - PKD (by DNA)
Ragdolls, Maine Coon, Siamese, Ori - HCM (MCO by DNA and/or ultrasonography)
Maine Coon - HD
I may be howled down, but I think that if there's a disease which is likely to occur in a particular breed, a truly responsible breeder will test for it and that (IMHO) is part of what might seem to be higher prices - you should be buying something as healthy as possible with no genetic defect stone unturned.
DNA testing (as per breeds/diseases above) might not be available in Malaysia/S'pore, but it's a small ask for breeders to send swabs offshore. My cats were PKD tested (USA) just before the service was available in Oz, but now it's available, at half the price, I figure that every Oz breeder should be re-confirming negative ultrasound results by DNA test. And the same goes anywhere else, where cats have only an ultrasound cert for PKD or even HCM in MCO.
