What breed is my cat??
So many people are confused about their cat's breed. So, to simplify :
1. *Registered pedigree x correct registered pedigree = Registered Pedigree**
2. ***Registered pedigree x wrong registered pedigree = Domestic
3. Pet shop cat x Registered Pedigree = Domestic
4. Pet shop cat x pet shop cat = Domestic
5. Rescued cat x pet shop cat = Domestic
* Some breeds of cat can be "outcrossed" which means you do not have to mate the same breed to each other. Eg. Abysinnians to Somalis, Persians to Exotics, Siamese to Orientals.
**Registration of the litter depends on the breeder. Some breeders can't be bothered to register the kittens, on the assumption that they can sell the kittens cheaper. This is NOT an ethical practice and good, reputable breeders do not practise this non-registering.
***This means you have to registered breeds which should NOT be mated to the other - eg. Maine Coons to Norwegians, Persians to Maine Coons, Abyssinians to American Shorthairs. The end result is that the kittens cannot be registered anywhere at any time and the kittens become Domestics.
While some cats "look like" whatever breed, they can never be registered as that breed. So, you can claim that your cat is a Maine Coon X, or Persian X.
Hopefully, Arisham will come along and translate this post into BM for easy understanding.
Jay, can you make this into a sticky please?
