Test Kits? Are you sure HCM can be tested by test kits? Is it something new? I do know that to test HCM, need sophiscated equipment and a ultrasound specialists. That is why the test are expensive and ranging from SGD $300-$400. Even the DNA test are expensive and need special equipment. Can you elaborate more on this HCM test kit, thanks.

The average (available) DNA test is around AUD40. No more special equipment needed than a buccal swab.

HCM (one mutation) can be tested (for MCO) by DNA (as above) but it's not universally available. That's certainly my understanding from the 2007 WCC seminar. Ragdoll tests are about to be possible.

So the sphynx still has to go for the traditional ultrasound test? That is to be sedated and all. And test kit meaning the swabs kit.

Let me explain, What you can do it that order and test from some LAB who do this testing and mostly are located in state. Then they will send you some cotton swap, then after you take the swap sample you send back to the lab to do the HCM Test for you. Is not a test kit is a Cotton Swap. Or you can ask you vet to draw blood from your cat which is more work to do, then send to the lab. as for price wise is about USD 100++ per cat

does those FIV, FIP, FELV consider genetic defect?

type of breed..
PKD, HD, HCM, SMA, ...

no..........FIV, FeLV and FIP are all infectious.......I guarantee that my cats are FIV and FeLV free by the time they leave my home but certainly I can't guarantee for any longer than that..............

FIV and FeLV infected mothers (but then, gosh, how on earth can someone breed a FIV/FeLV girl?) obviously have a high chance of transmitting these diseases to their kittens so to some people they look like as if they were inheretory (genetic) diseases..........

For FIV and FeLV, just one drop of blood will be good for the job and with the test kit I see from my vet, it can test both FIV and FeLV with the same kit at the same time (well, then obviously it's "two" drops of blood)..........and 15 minutes is all it takes..............

For FIP, hoho.........it's a little tricky. First of all, I can never imagine any of my cats was FIP infected or else I would have to take "Russmania" off the cat fancy........and while similar test kit (as FIV and FeLV) is also available but it's acuracy is not as defnite..................

And also the incubation period is controversial. According to some experiments with the virus, many cats will develop the disease within two weeks of infection. In household situations, it appears that the virus may be dormant in some cats for several months, or even years, before the disease occurs. But ever since symptoms show, baby, your cat is not far from the stairway to rainbow bridge............

Coronavirus test is the most widely adopted test among HK vets. This test detects antibodies to any coronavirus. Antibodies are the circulating defense agents of the immune system. There are two coronaviruses that affect the cat: the FIP virus and the enteric coronavirus. If positive, this test indicates that one or both of those viruses WAS or IS present in the cat.

However, there's not 100% certain that which virus is reacting to the test. Since antibodies may persist even if the virus is no longer present, a positive test can be misleading in some cases. Also, terminally ill cats may have their antibodies "tied up" when large amounts of the FIP virus are present. This can result in a false negative test result. In that case, other tests may be necessary............

And no, I don't guarantee FIP (no breeder in the world would I suppose).......it depends to a large extent on the life style of the new owner..........if the new owner enjoys the idea of bringing the cat everywhere (including taking the cat to petshop for grooming say for instance) then obviously I'd say the chance of catching FIP is high........

While FIV and FeLV are, in most cases, transmitted through contacts of bloods (e.g. fighting among strays) FIP is infectious by AIRBORNE virus........so the chance of getting FIP may not be as small as some optimists think...............

It's actually a standard buccal swab used for DNA testing. Can they (or WILL they) actually still do DNA blood tests commercially, once swbs are available?

For the record we do get a lot of Malaysian enquiry coming back to us regarding some of this type of enquiry asking for breeding cat at very low price & even pet quality cat for breeding, most importantly tht they can be bred.

The internet technology had made communication very easy so does information tracing.
