From my 4 cats, I dont think cats are happy to stay indoors 24-7. My partner and I keep our cats in a room/ garage converted just for them. We take them out for run few times a week and they love it. Each time we go into the room, they will always have this longing look to be let out.....but what to do, we are more selfish and outdoors is just not safe for them.

my girl arwen, whom i adopted when she was a stray did escape three times. she climbed the grill, went thru the top window and rest at the porch. when i opened the door she just come in like nothing happens.
at first my husband and i tought she escaped thru the door and we didn't notice. but one day, i saw her climbing the grill and poke her head out as my husband closed the venting window. from that day, its the window to be closed or we to supervise her!

A young 4 month old little grey tabby girl ventured into my garden, meowing softly and limping last week. I gave her some kitten kibbles and boiled chicken which she gobbled up as if hadn't eaten in months. She climbed up a platform surrounded by plants as you can see in the pictures below where my cats often basked and have their siestas in the daytime. My cats didn't bother or hiss at her, and considerately gave up the place to her. I also put a small two feet long clay pipe on the platform with a piece of cardboard and cloth inside for her to crawl into and hide for privacy to recover + her own bowl of clean bowl of water next to it.
While lying and recuperating in the long clay pipe, a stray male cat sneaked into the garden and attacked her. He had actually sought her out to attack her (so what we see in Discovery about males seeking out and killing the cubs of other males is very TRUE, as he quietly sneaked upstairs again the next day and attacked her again, but luckily she had been placed in and further protected by a small cage! ). Luckily I was nearby, and I drove the bully away - he must have made a fast mental calculation to compare his size with mine and decided that it was not worth the challenge !! Seeing that she was too tiny (size is a big factor in defense) and not safe even in the garden, I took her upstairs and confined her in an upstairs back balcony in my laundry area. Every time I held her and touched her rear, she gave out a small cry. Two days later, pus oozed out of an area near her tail and only then did I realize that the little girl had actually been bitten during the brief confrontation a few days earlier with the stray male cat in the garden and a big painful abscess had formed. I immediately took her to the nearest vet to clean the wound and she was put on a course of antibiotics. She has since recovered and is as playful, active and inquisitive as any adorable normal healthy kitten her age. This long story is just one example of the perils that the otherwise wonderful outdoor life poses for any kitten or cat, and mind you, this being only a CONTROLLED outdoor environment, meaning - this is my garden, cleaned and cleared of toxic materials and guarded by me as the gurkha, but still this happens. So what more in an area which has not got tukang kebun to keep out poisonous stuff, no lifeguards around, no godfathers to keep the mafias out, etc, etc. Yes, cats love the outdoors, God made the outdoors for them. However, humans have messed out the great outdoors so much and has refused to take accountability and responsibility for their actions, so the rules have definitely changed from what God originally intended things to be. And as such, the important and often critical decisions we make (however good the intentions) for our beloved pets' well-being need to be different. And we need the self discipline and courage to do so .... (especially the spaying/neutering part) ![]() http://kitten.com.my/forum/photo-ga...ds-gallore.html Last edited by FurKids : 02-07-2007 at 10:02 AM. |

oh yeah, i read somewhere that a fully indoor cat from young is totally domesticated in full sense of the word. which is actually very true as most of my cats that i raised from kittenhood and even some of the ex-strays would be scared if i bring them outdoors and will dash inside... they are content watching the great outdoors inside
which is great!

cats will always be cats, CURIOUS !!
my cats are all indoors, they will baring ramai2 by the front grill to feel the outside breeze n watch birds n squirrels at my front porch. evrytime i'm out at the porch to sidai baju or wash car, they'll follow n i allow them too coz amazingly, they are not bothered to even go far from me coz their terrified with the sounds of cars n motorbikes passing by. they dont even wana go near the front gate coz panas. and another place they like to lepak is my next door neighbors hse coz my neighbor just love to layan them. still within her compound. i duno if this good attitude only happens when i'm with them. might not know, when i'm not with them outside, and they accidentally am able to creep out of the house, they might be meowing with joy n glee n go jalan2. but so far, so good. none of them are even interested to get out of the hse compound. and thank god for that. wonderful, good cats. what more should i ask for from them

of the way, I hope that when they all hit 2 yrs old, they will all be wise "old" souls and less curious to have seen enuf of the world not to chase after every thing (not skirts!) that move. My 15 month old Tiger girl so far has satisfied her curiosity about heights, roofs and its birds (that she can just watch but cannot catch them) and is now satisfied with meowing me to carry her up to look out of my master bedroom windows for an elevated view of happenings in the neighbourhood from different angles regularly. ![]() |

Normally when I go out to work, I have to keep them inside the house. But, when I came back, I will let them out and I will watch them . They love it. After 1 @ 2 hours I will call them back. At least bagi mereka rasa nikmat being free. I make it as a routine. Don't worry. Normally, they won"t go far. They know their house. Their sense of directions is very strong. Susah org nak tangkap coz they are very cunning and not friendly to strangers.
