Gosh.. I'm almost crying when i read ur story! Thank god she's ok now

It's by nature that a cat being so curious what's behind the doors.. But letting them out from the house also brings alot of risk.. I even heard some ppl are crazy enough to pour boiling water on some of the stray cats..

It's better be safe than sorry.. but once in awhile, there's no harm bringing them out for a walk and play

Just from my experience, many months back my AC climbed out of my gate like a spider cat and squeezed thru the netting on top. He just sat at the doorstep waiting for someone to open the gate to let him in again. He didn't dare roam an inch. Imagine what a nasty shock I had but I realised he was too fearful to move or investigate its very unfamiliar surroundings.

My very 1st DSH was a kitten caught in the wild, she was 4 or 5 months then. From the time we kept her, she was always trying to escape. Many times we found her sitting outside our window ledge on the aircon compressor. She was never caged but she would meow the whole house down and scratch at the doors wanting to go out. We thought that she may be in heat but after her spaying and recovery she went back to her old ways again. Soon after, she started grooming herself obsessively till she became bald. We brought her to the vet many times and all couldn't find anything wrong with her. Their conclusion was that she was distressed. She became from bad to worse and she became less active and tried to avoid us when we approached her. Then one day, my maid left the windows open after cleaning, my DSH just ran out of the window and from the ledge was preparing to leap down our 4 storey flat. And she did. Luckily she survived from the fall and vet said her hind legs and hips were badly bruised. I then realised that she may be longing for the freedom that she grew up in ,in the 1st place. When I realeased her under my block, she never looked back at us instead she shot off into the wild. We place a collar and address tag on her so that if anything happen, ppl can contact us. I never seen a cat so happy and active. Everything about her seem so lively suddenly. Her fur grew back again and she is still around. The cat feeders knows that she's ours and are always on the look out for her.

I learnt a lesson; to never touch a cat in the wild unless they are injured or in need or they are baby kittens. We should leave nature alone and not unnecessarily disturb them. My next 2 DSH were from fosteres who fostered the kittens since they were a few days old and really what a difference it is.

Yea, it's like in Australia, where they put the aborigine in prison and he will just die because he simply cannot stand it ...

And ferals have to be released so soon after surgery ... otherwise they simply maim themselves ....

hmm.. how bout cats that we buy from petshops.. that are meant to be kept indoors.. do they often try to escape?

like my previous DLH.. he was always kept indoors.. this is because i dont want him to get dirty or any infections.. and another reason is i am afraid that strangers might grab him and take him away.. it is a possibility rite..

as a result from this, he always tries to escape from my room when he starts to grow.. at first, he was always hanging out at the balcony.. always looking down to the real world.. i myself wasnt so worried as i thought that he would never leap down because of the height and he never went out by himself..

but after few weeks.. suddenly one morning he went missing.. i tried looking at the balcony where he always is.. but he wasnt there..

terrified, i went down and as soon as i opened the sliding door.. he came in rushing into the house.. what a relief.. he had actually leaped of the balcony and put his feet on the cold grass of the real world.. but i didnt felt worry because he knows to come back..

after this incident, i never let him onto the balcony anymore as i fear that he might repeat his actions.. by me doing this.. he gets more irritated being kept indoors.. every chance that he has to escape he will never let go of it.. it's like he thinks he is in prison or some sort.. ALWAYS tries to escape when he gets the chance..!!

starting from that day, keeping him indoors was fun no more.. as he protested my acts.. by not liking me anymore.. not eating well.. got sick few times.. and ignoring my calls..

so i tot to myself that since he is already grown up and is eager to explore the real world, i decided to let him onto the balcony.. as i expected, he leaped down again and started wandering around the backyard and into other houses.. as i stared sadly from the balcony.. in my mind "what has happen to him? why is he running away?"

usually after he goes out for his 'journey'.. he returns home and waits for me to open the sliding door for him.. but one time, he didnt return for 4 days.. i knew that he had ran away.. or maybe someone took him away.. im not sure.. for the next 2 weeks i always sat at the balcony waiting to spot him in the bushes or maybe coming out from the neighbours house.. but it all ended in dissappointment.. he was gone for good!

well, that is the story of my DLH named BooBoo, that i took care of since he was a baby and left me just like that.. until now no sign of him..

ive posted up pictures of him and phone numbers in case anyone spotted him around.. but still no calls or any.. until one day i got an sms from an anonymous person claiming that she saw him dead!.. i felt sad, but happy in a way, at least i gave him the freedom he wanted before he died..

whats the point of keeping a cat indoors when he feels really2 unpleasant about it and totally changed his behaviour? well, what can i say... "Curiosity Kills the Cat"

I expected that reply and am very, very sad to hear that because so many cat owners are ignorant of this fact and from my experience and also what my research tells me, that is the top reason by far, for many male cats suddenly disappearing. They just catch a whiff of the scent of a female on heat and instinct immediately takes over. The instinct to mate & reproduce is extremely very strong in the animal kingdom, the males can fight ferociously to the death over females and territory, if they survive, they often suffer many injuries in the process. Also, when they chase the female on roads they can come in the path of on coming cars and other vehicles, and being fully focused on the mating game, they often get run down. This activity can go on for 1 week or more and if they survive all the dangers, you will find them return home looking thin, exhausted, hungry, all dirty from the chase, often wounded in fights with other males and can infected by diseases. That is why I always neuter my young boys before they reach maturity, even if they are kept indoors because you never know when they may suddenly discover a weak link in your house and manage to escape especially if they pick up the scent of a female in heat!

Another reason for a neutered boy to run away is when there is one or more territorial males bigger, fiercer fighter than him in the area, and they threaten to kill him or drive him out. This is very real, I have seen it happen to my boy (he was so terrorised and absolutely terrified, you can just see his haunting eyes!!) and you MUST do everything to protect him until he is full sized and fit and healthy so that he will not be afraid and be beaten and driven out of the area. Cats are territorial. The females once spayed are quite safe, but boys will always be challenged. That is why if we keep cats, we really need to understand the animal world so that we know what happens and what action to take is the best. When that cat is ours, or is loved by us, we need to understand how best to take care of it and what to do always as well as prepare for the unpredictable. That is why I always enjoy watching Discovery Channel and Animal Planet. You get to peek into their world and life and see things which otherwise you will never know or understand what is happening. They are animals, not humans. We must understand their ways and not expect them to be like us and think of them as "humans", rationalizing things and their actions as human beings. But so many cat owners have lost their cats and never really, really tried hard to find out what happened so that it never happens again to another cat of theirs. So very sad.
