I used to let my 2 ex-strays DSH (Nanya & Baba) to have their total freedom in roaming in and out of the house. It is a long story anyaways..... 3 years back my Nanya girl came back home being poisoned. It happened at 1130pm and she was laying down on the floor flat, jerking, puking and uncontrolled diarrhea. She was very much in pain and her tongue was sticking out. My sister called me and i rushed back home from my appointment. I was totally lost and could not do much to help her. I tried calling for house call but the vet was away and could not attend. I had no choice but to rush her to the Animal Hospital in KL. At the end, she died on the way there.... I was too much pain for me to handle and i had to bury her with my own hands in my garden..... The pain was unbearable and until today i still could not forget her and i can still see the picture clearly in my mind how much she had suffered before she died.....

So now, i would prefer to be safe then sorry..... Especially my current gal Nisha(stray, adopted 1 month ago) is a handicap cat without her right paw. There is no way she can defense herself in the outside world. She cant run fast, she can only hop. I would not want to take the risk again and i dont want incident like Nanya to happen on her..... But it hurts to see her being kept in the room and nothing much to do besides sleep, eat and poop.... I can tell you, she is bored to death. So out of guilt, me and my fiance would bring her out every night for car ride and walk around the housing area. She is a tame cat and she is cool with car ride and walk (me doing the walking and she is in my arms). There are also big dogs roaming around and fears cats, so her freedom is not granted. Not until we buy our own property with a safe environment.

And what happened to Baba? I put him on boarding during CNY few years back in a pet shop and guess what? The pet shop lost my baby king and i cried my eyes out and gone insane!

Meowchye, to reduce boredom, you can create a small rock garden in your room using cheap indoor plants with tough leaves so they can tumble, crush and flatten if they feel that they can improve on the landscaping design a bit. You can always replace these or rearrange the whole thing after a month or so as these kids get bored and want new smells and things to perk them up. Be cautious with any chemicals in the plants too, watch out for toxidity. I think Nanya ate rat poison or something toxic. You know how some ppl are so free with poison usage, even the mosquito and insect spray ... That is why I always make my home and compound so attractive to my FurKids that they seldom venture out of my garden even though they have the chance to do so. Even though allowed outdoors, they are in the house when I am in, and in the garden when I am there. One of the secrets? I often have a chunk of chicken breast meat which I tear in VERY, VERY thin strands and offer as treats and also I touch, pet and sweet talk to them all the time. I make sure that each time they make contact with me (a look or a call) I will always respond. If you don't, they will soon stop and ignore you and it will be very, very difficult to retrain.

Hi amal,

Oh the pet shop that lost my BaBa already closed down . Yeah it is sad to witness Nanya's death.

As for Nisha, she met an accident at a construction site few months back. When we found her she is already handicap. Thts the reason why we decided to take her home even though we do not have a proper place for her at time being. You can find her pictures and story under My Cat & i. She may be a very common looking cat, but she is truely an amazing cat and a strong survival.
Hehehe, the car ride and walk is just an act to cover our guilt .

So indoor or outdoor? My choice would be indoor.

Not necessarily true that a neutered boy will come back. Betul, the area he covers is smaller, but like I said before, if he doesn't run into the path of a ferocious territorial male which chases him and he runs off very far in panic and jadi sesat hingga tak tau balik atau get hit by a car or some other vehicle. Like I always say, just sometimes it happens, doesn't necessarily mean it will always happen. Just because something didn't happen doesn't necessariy mean it will never happen. I saw it happen with my neutered boy when a new neighbour moved in with a huge unneutered male which quickly bashed up everybody and claimed the territory as his own. I lost my precious boy. He DIED!!. He didn't manage to run home to safety in time ... And that huge male even entered my house spraying everywhere, and went upstairs hunting for my boy who ran into my bedroom trembling to hide!!!!

I complained to my neighbour and asked them to confine their cat, but they did nothing. In the end, I terminated that immigrant bully and made the whole neighbourhood a safer place for all the other friendlier males.

What was a handicap gir like Nisha doing in the construction site? How did she end up there in the first place?

don't forget to check on what plants are safe for cats... not all common tough plants are safe for cats!
