(1) yes, i know and that's why i'm equally confused since there is no 100% gurantee the outdoor is safe.....controlled outdoor in Ashley's case is impossible or it can be possible with me sitting on top of the roof too (imagine that , in no time the whole taman will be watching me, luciky enough whole malaysia would too)
You misunderstand me here. By controlled I mean you assess the area accessible to her the way I do. I know the traffic volume in my area and which of my cats are street-smart enough not to sit and lepak on the road and ignore cars, the cleanliness of my own and my neighbours' compound, whether they tabur rat poisons to kill rats in their own compounds or not, whether they contaminate the environment and soil indiscriminately or not with chemical, used flourescent bulbs which break and leak mercury into the soil, have dirty car porches full of yucky engine oil, etc. etc, who are the cat hating neighbours kalo ade, etc. etc. Who are the cat napping neighbours ("Oh, ingat tak de tuan ...) Luckily in my area got none except the "oh ingat tak de tuan" one ... ade satu only

Also, I control the time spent outdoors - freedom starts at 6 or 7 am till 6 pm latest because they are nocturnal and get active at night, and meet all the potentially hazardous roaming strays that you do not usually see during the day.

All food are served in respective cages consistently at exactly the same time each day and they are well trained to hop in a wait while saya tutup pintu mereka wang by wang ...

Don't forget ample clean drinking water for her too so she will not drink toxic longkang water ...

So the question is......should just let her be the outdoor/indoor cat or make her sit in the house also....like the rest ?

Oh yeah just incase you all wondering when Ashley does her escape all the rest will just have a look with much surprise but they won't follow her go out (not yet, later dunno).....

I'm not as experience as many of the forumers but this is my stance for my cats. Yes dear this is not answering your questions. Saje nak menyibuk.

Base on my feeling, observation and not so educated guess I think phycologically cats will be more happy outside. I myself feel board staying home sometimes eventhough I can roam my house like nobody business . I think same goes to my cats lah kot. In my opinion they are more happier outside..

On the otherhand it is dangerous out there. Some fella might cat nap them. Or worst if they bring home deadly virus home and share it with other cat at home. Macam FIP dry or wet and Feline AIDS tak de vaccine...

My Maya one twice got out...a breakout actually. But she is afraid of outside nie. Kejap jer dia balik. Less then one hour.. hehe. ..tau pun takut!!!

Don my beloved hero nie always outsmart me to find a way to get out. Dia boleh seek celah kaki, rip the plastic net, jump out of the 6 feet window ( bounce dulu to something else...)...Previously I'm very piss off dengan dia punya preferences to go out nie. Penat aku nak jaga. Pasal when he is out pastu bila dia lapar dia balik... pastu kena qurantine dulu if I got time to bath him. Once his out dia confrim kena mandi dulu before to roam back in my house. Just Imagine kena buat this 3 times in a row on a busy week.... Now I still do the quarantine and bath tapi without the piss off. I understand that stuck in the same house for 24x7 is darn boring for an active cat like Don... If he's manage to get out I just pray for his safety + worry. Tolonglah jangan kena langgar because this is too grousome for me...

Macam spay gak, I took the lesser of two evils. I think lagi banyak goodness in indoor dari outdoor nowdays. Ok lah I'll answer your question now... Marjan vote indoor for Ashley

yup that's a good thought, most of my cats might like it but not Ashley because what she wants is freedom.....freedom to catch birds and walk around roof top......

An outdoor enclose would not be suitable for my current house, nanti ramai anak2 jiran saya buat circus in front of my house and soon my neighbours would come up with stories cats bwkk penyakit lah, cats menyebabkan suami dia kahwin lain lah.......and anak mati terkejut sbb neighbout keep many cats lah......you know lah all the rubbish humans can create just by finding out you got pets in the house.....(at the moment my neighbour know i hv cats, tapi tak tau aku simpan sampai 18ekor.....they think 3-4ekor)

But my long dreamed garden concept balcony would be great, still waiting for a tansri or datosri to sponser....kikikiki....

Hantar Ashley to your sawah padi kat Batang Berjuntai tu laaa, let her tolong the scarecrows and chase all the sparrows she wants (korek, korek, korek ke tu ataupun is it some other place Suz sebut?) But seriously, Suz, Ashley is so much like my "troop" - Caroline & kids - in nature (and maybe that is the reason why I am so very fond of her) and how old did you say Ashley is? She is an outdoor cat through and through and it will be good for her to be allowed out and enjoy her life to the fullest so that when she is older and down with arthritis, joint and other old age problems she can always look back and have good memories of her younger days, just like we do rather than deprive her of her youth. We as good stewards just make sure they have quality food and all the required vaccinations for protection. I am sure many of us would choose life outdoors with its calculated risks (of course we take precautions) rather than a super max prison. That is why I do boating and go off-road ... but I also sit home, sip my lemonade and tea, listen to good music, read a good book, stroke my cats and watch them play ... Just my personal 2-cents ...
