Hi guys,
Im interested in setting up a cattery but needs some opinion. Im doing this as a partime with full commitment and out of love for cats. Just wondering about some things such as: 1) Startup cost 2) How to register to CFA 3) Is this business good? niche market? low ROI? Im a business owner and if i do setup my own cattery, i would not be a problem to take care of them. Thanks |

Before I answer your questions, I need to ask - what does "partime with full commitment" mean? And, second question - which breed? Also, I would advise that you start off with a show neuter first and become an exhibitor at cat shows to understand the breed you are dealing with. If you can answer my first 2 questions, I will answer your first question. Answers: 2. Easy, fill up the online form and pay the fees. 3. ROI??? Hahahahaha - I am an established breeder now of 4-5 years and a business person and have YET to see ANY ROI! The money you put into the care of the cats and the showing of cats would eat up most if not all your profits (if any la). But then again, I breed Abyssinians, not a popular breed this side of the world. A person becomes a breeder for mainly 3 reasons : 1. Because they are in love with that particular breed 2. Because they think or dream of being able to achieve the breed standards as set out by any registry. 3. And most importantly, because they love cats.

Thanks for your answers.
Well, partime means, i will not quit my current job and sit at home to manage the cattery. Full commitment means 100% care and love, not halfway and stop. I will not be a backyard breeder just to ge the profit and not care about the cat. I love cats, i have 3 DLH at home. Secondly, i am interested in Siberian, coz correct me if im wrong but i dun see any siberian breeder in Malaysia yet. Nearest is Singapore. |

"Interest" is a start, but 'passion' is what's needed. Have you met Siberians and are you familiar with them? To take on a breed, you need to be totally involved if you're going to do things well. Maybe there's not such a 'market' for Siberians in Malaysia - that could explain why there are none. I know that it's not so easy breeding NFO in Malaysia (or anywhere in S E Asia) but those who are committed do so, anyway. Abymummy's advice is good. Get a neuter of your preferred breed and show it. That way you serve an apprenticeship. I truly believe that to be a serious (non backyard) breeder, you need to be part of the show scene. You don't have to be a constant winner, but you need to expose yourself to other breeds, other breeders and learn from the judging you see happening.

as long as you are doing things the right way, ROI will always be negative. I know you might be a business person, but you should never never think of breeding in terms of ROI

Hi Azeland,
I think you already emailed me before about becoming a mainecoon breeder and like I said before, tell me your intention, your objective and ambition for becoming breeder. Like Abymummy said, the intention need to be right all the time as once you think profit is above all your other agenda, then you will become something that most of people here dont like. CFA Cattery Registration is only USD50 only. What you can do:- 1. Gather all infos on the breed that you plan/think you want to do breeding. 2. Visit a cat show and talk to exhibitor, CFA ambassador, breeders, etc 3. Join a cat show by participating either as exhibitor, clerk, steward etc. 4. Understand the breed standard 5. Understand the pedigree and genetic 6. Understand cat diseases 7. Think on where you plan to get the stud and queen from..local or import? 8. how you gonna keep you cat at home? outdoor enclosure , indoor room or free roam in your house? 9. what you gonna do if the cat pregnant later? 10. how are you gonna sell them? etc etc etc |
