Take one Balinese, dip it in the colors of the rainbow and you have a Javanese. The Javanese is everything that is Balinese, and then some. This breed appears in the lynx point and tortie point patterns, as well as red and cream point colors. The Javanese loves to show off with spectacular performances of acrobatic skills.

Personality: This moderately active cat has strong likes and dislikes. It can be very territorial and will make a faithful, if demanding, companion. A heightened sense of hearing makes the Korat very sensitive to surrounding activities. Owners say Korats have a sense of humor and love to play with almost any toy.
Appearance: The muscular, compact Korat weighs from 4 to 10 pounds and has a broad chest. Inside the heart-shaped outline of the head, a second heart can be traced from the chin, over the ridges of the eyebrows, dipping back down to the bridge of the nose. The nose should have a lion-like downward slope in profile. Oversized eyes are a luminous peridot green.

Personality: LaPerms are gentle, affectionate companions "like no other in the world," according to breed originator Linda Koehl of Kloshe cattery. They enjoy being stroked and show their appreciation by purring loudly. Incredibly demonstrative, LaPerms like to reach for their owner's face with their paws, or rub against the face and neck. They love being kissed and will kiss back. LaPerms are inquisitive by nature, and also relaxed enough to enjoy being draped over a shoulder or cradle in arms while on their backs. Generally quiet voiced, they adapt well to apartment living.
Appearance: The somewhat triangular head of the LaPerm has fairly wide-set ears, relatively full whisker pads and large, expressive eyes. It carries a splendid set of curly whiskers and eyebrows. The males weigh from 8 to 12 pounds; females, from 5 to 8 pounds. The breed comes with long and short hair. The coat can vary in length and fullness depending upon the season and the cat's maturity. The coat can be merely wavy or consist of curls that range from tight ringlets to long corkscrew curls. The tightest curls occur on the underside of the cat, on the throat and at the base of the ears. The longhair has a curly, plumed tail and often exhibits a full, curly ruff. It is softer in texture than the shorthair. Kittens can be born hairless, with short wavy hair or with straight hair. At about 2 weeks of age they start to go bald.

Personality: Often called "gentle giants," Maine Coons are known to accept people and activities with easy-going grace. Affectionate and social, they love to be near their owners, play fetch and can by taught to stroll on a leash.
Appearance: Maine Coons are known for their large size, with females averaging up to 16 pounds and males up to 18, with some tipping the scales at 20-plus pounds. With a long, shaggy coat that lays close to the body, a bushy long tail, tufted paw pads and large ears adorned with furry tufts and "lynx tips" on top, their build reflects the Maine Coon's origins in the cold Northeast.

Appearance: Powerfully built cat with deep, broad chest. Back rises in arc to round, tailless rump. Broad head with firm, round muzzle and prominent cheeks. When viewed from behind, shape of the inner edges of ears resembles a rocker on a cradle. Longhaired (Cymric) and shorthaired varieties.

Personality: Friendly and self-assured, this "regular cat" is more affectionate and people-oriented than the average domestic.
Appearance: While short of leg, the Munchkin must be a normal size cat in all other respects, with its body approximately 40 percent longer than its legs are tall. The head is a broad wedge with a slight stop in the profile from nose to forehead. Medium- large ears flare to complete the moderate wedge. The legs are muscled and not bowed.

Personality: Although not usually a lap cat, the Wegie wants constant people presence. They sometimes develop extreme loyalty to one family member. Intelligent and curious, they can show patience and do not stress easily. While not overly demonstrative and demanding, they love giving head bumps and receiving chin scratches.
Appearance: The product of natural selection, the Norwegian Forest Cat is large and robust. The coat has two layers, designed to insulate and shed water. The outer coat should feel silky. In winter the cat has a full ruff around the neck and britches in addition to the expressive plumed tail carried year-round. Heavily muscled hind legs make them great climbers. The combination of an equilateral-triangle shape to the head and almond-shaped eyes that tilt upward give the face an almost-sultry look. While brown tabby and white is the most popular, the coats come in a rainbow of patterns and colors.

Personality: Exotic in looks only. Intelligent and easily trainable, this breed adapts well to homes with dogs and other cats. They travel well and are not bashful with strangers. Ocicats thrive on human interaction and therefore do not do well in homes where they are left alone for long periods. They talk like a Siamese but do not have the same raucous voice.
Appearance: A large, athletic cat with an extremely muscular body. The head is a gently curved wedge with a squared muzzle and broad nose, much like the ocelot it mimics. The coat is short, with a satin sheen that shows off the pattern. Spots on the body are shaped like a thumbprint and ideally scattered randomly over the body. Classic, or marble, patterns occur in Ocicat litters but are not showable. Like any other tabby, there are stripes on the legs, rings on the tail and vest buttons on the belly, as well as dramatic facial markings. All markings should be clearly defined against the lighter background color.

Personality: A playful, intelligent and loyal companion, these cats are curious and talkative, demanding your love and attention. Forget about doing any project without the help of your cat. Though not a lap cat, Orientals do enjoy a good cuddle.
Appearance: A graceful, sinuous cat with long tapering lines, the Oriental's body is a hard, muscular tube the same size at the hips and shoulders. Slim legs and tail must be long to balance the body length. The Oriental head, like the Siamese, is a long wedge with straight lines extending into a large, flared ear. Much emphasis is placed on the absolutely straight profile. This cat comes in more than 300 colors. Eye color should be green except in whites or bi-colors, which also may be blue- or odd-eyed.
