Demonstrating early spaying on my 3 months old kitten. I spayed this female Scottish Fold yesterday because she is going to a new home soon. She is 96 days old and is the smallest in the litter, weighs only 1.15kg. I did the surgery around 2pm. Photos taken shortly after the surgery. She waked up half an hour later. Even though she looks weak, she was eating, urinating in the litter tray and jumping up and down from my bed last night.

On the second day, she is more or less back to normal, I could hardly keep her still for photographing. She is ok and so is the wound.

I think some of these question has been asked before but I'm gonna go ahead and ask them again.
Are there any side effects of early neutering ? Can a male be neutered as early as the female ? Will it effect their growth ? How will kittens which are neutered at an early age act (temperamant) ? For kittens this young, was the gas or the jab used ? What is the youngest age considered ok for a kitten to be neutered ? Thank You in advance ![]() |

I wish if I could see the photos but I can’t. That is the only reason why I had to forget my dream ambition to become a gynecologist. I cannot imagine how you guys (human and animal doctors) can perform surgeries (cut open living being, see the blood, remove the organs and stitch back). I have tried when I was 16, 17 and 18. I cannot even “operate” dead tikus in makmal science (Form 5). I still regret I can’t do it until today, or not, at this age I would have been Professor Dr. Jay of O & G. Sorry for running out of topic but .. I just couldn’t figure out how you guys could do it. |

Apparently none. Please refer to http://www.winnfelinehealth.org/rep...rly-neuter.html and http://www.winnfelinehealth.org/hea...pay-neuter.html They are other references dated back as far as 1990 from different vet journals. Quote:
Both males and females can be neutered as early as 7 weeks. Quote:
Physical development appears to progress similar to those neutered at 7 months. No differences in urethral diameter have been found between these cats, suggesting that early neutering is unlikely to increase the risk of urethral blockage. Quote:
Behavioural development appears to progress similar to those neutered at 7 months. It has been demonstrated that kittens neutered at an early age often become people-oriented and are calmer and gentler, less likely to wander and retain juvenile behaviour longer. Quote:
Both can be used safely. Quote:
7 weeks.

It all comes naturally with practices. It is just part of the training in Med and Vet schools.
Believe it or not, I was in Science stream but I didn’t take up Biology in Form 6 and Year 12 (Australia) because I think it was cruel to cut open small animals. Quote:

Hi Pussy,
I'm very glad to know that there are more and more vets practising Early age neutering, I know that my vet does and he'll be getting 3 kittens from me to neuter/spay at the age of 3 months soon after which they'll be put up for quiet adoption. The rule of thumb is that the kitten must weigh at least 1 pound (1lb) before it can be neutered so that the effects of anaesthetic (sp?) is minimal right?

Yes, I think more vets in Malaysia should practice early neutering to help reduce stray kittens and puppies. Breeders should neuter all their kittens before selling. Only those intended for breeding are sold entire. Shelters and individual help re-homing stray kittens/cats should neuter their kittens/cats before re-homing otherwise you are just creating more stray kittens. The dose of anaesthetic is depending on the weight but the rule of thumb is the kitten must healthy. It all depends on individual vet, what weight and age he/she is comfortable with to perform the surgery. For myself, I will operate on females at least 3 months old and weighs at least 1 kg. I am more flexible with males. I can castrate males at 2 months old and weighs less than 1kg, as long as they are healthy. The kitten I spayed is already back to normal last night. She is running around and playing really rough with her sibling. If everything goes well, I will remove the sutures in another 4 days.
