Hi,
a stray mother cat just gave birth to 3 new kittens in front of my porch 3 days ago... out of pity i put them in a box layered with crumpled newspaper. looks like they're doing just fine for now. but i have a small problem here, is that i dont know what to feed the mother cat since i have no experience in pets. so far i have been feeding her once a day with half ikan rebus, i dono what's the actual name but we chinese calls it ikan kampung, and a small portion of ikan bilis which i rendam inside a bowl of hot water (to make it warm and soft) before dishing it out. i dont plan on rearing them long term and i planned to shoo them away once they have the ability to run around and find food on their own. another problem is, the cat mother didnt drink much water despite leaving a bowl right in front of the box. Kindly advise on what i can do dor the mean time. by the way my porch area at night time got lotsa mosquitoes, is there any protection i can put? |

Firstly, thank you for looking after momma and babies, that's very kindhearted of you!
Secondly, if you can handle it, please go to a pet shop and get some kitten food for momma cat. Keep leaving her water even if you think she's not drinking, she may be getting water elsewhere! Thirdly - if you a re accepting the responsibility of caring for all of them, I would urge you to have mom cat spayed in a couple of months time...and also urge the vet to neuter the kittens at the same time. This will avoid your getting more kittens in the future! As for the mosquitoes...it all depends on how much money you are willing to spend....

one thing i've been keeping the same diet for these few days. but i dont mind buying a packet of dry cat food, what i fear is that she'd refuse to eat it, as last year i've bought a whiskas brand kitten food for a stray kitten but it refused... so wasted my money.
by the way yesterday the mother kitten carried the 3 kitten away, into the drain in front of my house. i dono why it wants to do that as i've provided them a box and roof over their head... but just after a couple of hours, heavy rain came and the mother carried them back to my place. today, it once again carried them out of the box, but place them at a corner of my porch... i was wondering what's wrong with her, moving the kittens around... ![]() by the way that's the pic taken last nite... |

The reason why she's moving her kitties around most probably, she feels that the present place as not safe maybe due to being too exposed, like when u'were not around other cats came visiting or even humans!! At this stage, usually mum will be very possessive. Even domestic cats, sometimes would not let her human master touches her babies!! Since your cat, is a stray cat, it'll be sometime bef she can trust u, esp. with her kitties!! As to the box where u'd placed the mum & her kitties, u can improve this nesting place as to be safer, by looking for a bigger box & then turn it upside down to cover the box in which u placed the mum & kitties. But please make sure u cut a small "door"( like an entrance to a cave) so that mum can easily have access to her kitties. At this stage, its advisable that u placed her indoor as the kitties will be exposed to all sought of danger, such as our weather, & also from other cats esp male stray cats who do eats kittens! 212 u are so lucky, the mum & kitties are lovely. Its so kind of u 4 looking after her.& kitties..congrats...& good luck! ![]() Last edited by Adibah60 : 20-01-2007 at 08:35 AM. |

Its good if u can buy dry food, b'cos it has all the vitamins & nutrients. If u can afford it please buy premium cat food like Iams or Science Plan or Royal Canin from pet shop. They don't sell this premium food at supermarkets tho! Certain pet shop sells in small quantities, I mean they repacked them & sells in 500g to 1 kg. size. At this stage, lactating stage, please give her kitten food. If u're afraid she might not like it u can steam the kibble or if u've a microwave, placed the kibble in a bowl + a bowl of water & m/wave it for a few seconds. Anor option, is u mixed the kibble (dry food) with the wet food...my picky cats usually finds this irresistible...mmmm...sedap menjilat jari!! |
