i think if a breeder know exactly what he or she want in the new breed and have a good background in genetics, it will help a lot... and working with a breed that can breed true would be a breeze too...

on the other hand, new breeders of existing breed, armed with very little knowledge of cat breeding equal to disaster too!

U can never get a 100% sure result of mating a good pair, the result is still a gamble......especially on the starting point of a breeding........perhaps towards the end you can get better result.........is still alot of mixing and trying to get that one special breed...........hei lets not forget on the health of the cat itself........nobody can see to that as well, your good pair might not make to a next level.....so you have to start all over again.......

i agree with you i remember last time lesley write a good kitten is a result of good grandparents... anyway, even with existing breed you can't be sure you'll get show quality kittens from show quality parents / grandparents.... just like us human lah...

anyway, one thing i think of last time, why people like to breed munchkins and curls? in my opinion, perhaps its cheaper to buy a good sire, then gamble and mate with domestics to produce good kittens (hopefully!). the resulting dsh can be adopted out for free, the dlh can be sold for few hundred bucks. good business??? initial start-up much less than buying at least a pair of breed quality cats. > no offence to anyone <

Wellllll..............in my case, some hundreds. But they were not domestic cats, necessarily and they were all homed successfully (NEUTERED!) so there was no problem caused. But I was extremely conscientious about what happened to the 'cast-offs' and indeed, was monitored (as is any breeder) by my association and the judges' panel, who assessed every kitten I ever produced (standard practice here on an experimental programme).

Exactly, that's why breeding is not for everybody. Even a breeders themselves need to know the limit.

In Malaysia, we have not reached to a level whereby genetic coding in the background can be studied easily. Therefore people still practice traditional breeding method. Thus, every consequence of the mating needs to be place into consideration.

It’s applied to all breeders, whether are cats, dogs, bird, cow, goat, fish etc.

Only thing is as cat or dog breeders, we are more humane. We did not simply "terminate" the outcome like cow, goat breeder did.

We re-homed them properly to alter home (hopefully all breeders did so!!!!)

That's how most of Malaysians think!

“Wow! The cat so nice1 I want to buy and BREED them!”

I receive numerous approaches asking for breeding cat. If neutered don’t want!

To me, to be a true breeder, the intention (in Malay – “nawaitu”) is very important. If you breed them out of the love to the breed, I will guarantee your success. If no, it will end up “bungkus kain” at the end. REASON – Not profitable!
