OK, I know I may sound a bit silly asking, but I am just a cat lover with no knowledge of cat breeding.
How do you define breeding? If we have cats who we wish to have some generation, let's say, if they give birth to 4 kittens, we wanna keep one and sell the other 3, is this allowed? My friends have told me that if my cat have kittens, they'd buy it from me and they know others who would as well. I have not decided yet, but I might consider it. My late grandma has over 30 cats and though some are spayed she couldn't afford spaying all, and my family are all cat lovers. It was hard for me to spay my cat so I have to see them suffer for a few days...it hurts. So I have vaccinate them but I have not spayed them. Once I brought my cat Cheeky to the pet store with me, and the owner told me he'll buy it for RM2500. I was shocked cos I would not sell him for a million bucks even. I wonder how much would the store owner sell the cat if he actually bought him with that price? Anyways, in short, I guess I just wanna knoe, if I were to decide to have my Sophie pregnant and have cute kittens, does this called breeding and do I need approval to sell them? Appreciate the senior wiser cat lovers advice. Thanks! |

I am assuming you are talking about breeding domestic long hairs, not pedigrees...
1. breeding in cat terms just means making kittens. 2. No, you don't need anyone's permission to breed. 3. Ask yourself - why do I want to breed? Is it for the money?? Can you justify the reasons for breeding - if only to yourself? 4. Ask yourself - can I afford to breed? This is a very important question... - If there is a delivery complication, can you afford a cesarean section operation? - If no-one wants your kittens, can you afford to keep ALL the cats and kittens, and if 6 months down the road, you haven't neutered the kittens, can you afford to KEEP the original cats, the kittens and the kittens FROM the kittens? And, at the end of the first year, could you afford to keep, the original pair, the first litter A, kittens out of litter A, AND also Litter B kittens for the original pair??? (There's a chart around here in the forum that shows uncontrolled breeding). - Can you afford to maintain all the cats? good food, annual vaccinations, medical costs (which are rising) etc? 5. Breeding for the interests of selling only (and to petshops at that!) is badly termed Backyard breeding - would you like to have the title of BYB attached to your reputation? I, personally have no problems with anyone wanting to breed their cats - seriously...BUT be RESPONSIBLE for the kittens. If you sell the kittens, ensure that the new owners are responsible for the kittens. There is a reason why you can now pick up DLH or DSLH of the sides of the roads now - it's called uncontrolled breeding. People breed and breed until there's no more space at home and then they let the cats go free, unneutered. These cats then continue to breed uncontrollably. The original reason they bred the cats breed in the first place - oh because so and so said they wanted a kitten and had friends who wants kittens also... Be very definite in your reasons for breeding. Many of us frown upon unnecessary breeding - just because the original pair of cats are cute DOES NOT mean that their kittens will be cute - simply because you don't know the history behind the original pair.... I know this is long but one word of caution - If ever, there is a post in MCF about YOU wanting to give away kittens for free, 99% will know what has happened and dear, you DO NOT want to feel the backlash from that!

A lot of unfamiliar terms in your reply. I guess I'll pass on breeding, scary the thought of having all the cats on the street. i was not thinking that far...I'm staying in condo and max cats i can keep is 4, now i have 2 and my friend is donating one to me cos he is moving overseas. so i have room for only one more, which i thought of breeding my cats and keep one kitten. In fact, he has another 3 which he asked me to adopt and I'm still thinking of them if no one wants to adopt.
be4 i was married, my mom had 2 cats, both were sickly in the street and was picked up and both now spayed. i have no experience is pregnant cats... oh well, then i must say i have to reconsider this with my husband long and clearly. thanks for da advice! |

the petshop can buy your cat for rm2500 because after that you cat will be used for breeding. if it is female, she will produce at least two litters a year. if she has 4 kittens per litter, that's eight kittens a year. If each kitten is sold for rm800, that's rm6400!
do the rest of the math ![]() i know because i have been to kitten mills before. never sell/rehome your pets unneutered. i also know people who have sold/given their pets away to 'loving families' only to have them end up in this kind of situation. i don't know how they sleep at night after that.
