Default SPCA - my humble suggestion

I read a lot of comments on SPCA in this forum. It is heart-broken to read about those innocent soul put to sleep due to no better alternative(s) available. At the same time, we know that SPCA tried their very best to provide the best that they could for these lovely four legged babies with the limited funding and space that they have. It is extremely tough to fit in their shoes, what more – to walk in that shoe for a mile or two.

My Humble Suggestion:

What about introduce a ‘sponsorship’ scheme.
Whereby one person could sponsor one or two (depends on individual’s budget) of these innocent soul until they found place to call home?

How it works?
A person will pick the baby(s) he would like to sponsor, and pay in advance the sponsorship (may be two months in advance?). While anyone who goes to SPCA cud decided to adopt the sponsored baby. The sponsor himself will try to promote this baby to those that he knows (his network).
As he promotes only one or two cats/dogs, the adoption success rate might be higher – due to concentrated effort.
Once the baby found new home, the sponsor responsibility ended there. If he would like to sponsor some more babies, he could do so. If he could not afford or need a break, he may stop for a while or forever.

The benefits:
1. The chance for this baby to put to sleep due to $$ constraint reduced tremendously.
2. The chance for this baby to get a good home is higher due to personal promotion of his availability within the sponsor’s network.
3. Possible impact on ‘tax’. As this could be considered as donation…it may have impact on sponsor’s tax. Err. This portion I am not really good at….cud someone help.
4. The sponsor felt good as he did something good with whatever $$ that he cud afford to put aside.

Conclusion:
Just imagine if one former sponsor 1 cat/dog? How many cat/dog will find new home within 2 months???

Hi!

I think that's a great idea but maybe a little too complicated for most malaysians. Most people would rather just give money.... or look the other way.

What might be easier but also similar is to allow people to make a monthly donation of 5RM/10RM/15RM/20RM/25RM etc....that is autodeducted from their credit card. Most people don't want to give a lump sum up front but would like to give their continual support throughout the year.

Paypal has this option.... maybe someone can help the spca set it up.

If I'm not mistaken, SPCA does have a form which one can fill in one's CC #, details and such for monthly contributions to SPCA. If you're interested, just give SPCA a callm to check it out.

i strongly believe that so many kind ppl wish to help and adopt a cat or two when they visit scpa. however, not many of them have the extra money to "buy" the cat/kittens. furthemore, they need to buy cat stuffs for example, food, trays etc etc, not including the medical stuff related if they adopt a sick kitten/cat.

thus it just kill my heart knowing that scpa put the "unwanted" cat to sleep. really. they shoudlve release the cat to the street, at least this "unwanted" cats have their own faith. if they lucky, someone kind will pick them up and adopt them.

i suggest for those of you who got cats/kitten, dont send them to scpa. have a heart and time in finding a new owner to take care of ur pets/cats.

or neautered them if you dont want kittens.

i accidently just adopted a kitten upon my visit to scpa ampang. the kitty was then, a sick kitty. just couldnt leave the centre at that time coz she was very "persuasive" of me to take her. lucky i have 150 buck to pay her up and thank god it includes vaccination, deworm, and neutered.

i understand scpa needs money to run the centre. but if they believe that the cats and kitten that people sent over to centre have no chances of getting adopted and more chance of being put down to sleep. they better not accept the cats. just take the cat that have "value" for adoption. just be honest. but dont kill cats/kitten.

or at least, put minimal fee, or say RM50 or less for each cats for ppl who want to adopt a cat/kitten as a donation fee. at least the extra money in their pocket they will use it to buy food/medicine to the new kitten/cats. esp to ppl who never had a cat before.

spca valued the cat according to breed. local cats (DSH-DLH) is cheaper than the rare breed. which to me is unfair.they shouldnt be tagging the cats/kitten "adoption fee" according to their breed or cuteness, in fact, they should treat and have a standard rate for all cats regardless of their breed.

by doing that, the cat/kittens have a better chances of getting adopted, even by a cat owner who have many cats. (probably they will consider to squeeze the new kitten/cat in)

dont kill the unwanted cats. set them free. unless if they really a sick cat with no chance to live at all.but the unwanted cats, let them live free.

i strongly urge scpa to change the adoption process and rules esp when people are having less money in their wallet.

i'm not sure if the SPCA actually reads this forum. if you are very keen to change how they operate, perhaps a letter to them and the press would be more effective. i know many people feel the same as you do.

If U believe in "no-kill", kind friend, U might want to donate yr $$ to a "no-kill" shelters like Furry Friends Farm and SCCARF instead of to a "kill" shelter like SPCA and PAWS.

There are many pet rescuers out there who think like you do and you might want to help them out through donations.

The "No kill" practice is now being carried out by many local authorities in many states in America and to control the stray population they practise TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) instead of euthanisation as more and more findings reveal that it is the only effective and successful solution.

Killing really does not reduce or solve the problem although it costs just as much money and resources.

Check up SCCARF and brave Sabrina Yeap's Furry Friends Farm which are doing a very good job but are in dire need of support.
