Meet the FANATICATS
These cats rule the humans who rescued them, and the humans aren't complaining, writes JESSICA LIM NST, 29 Oct 2006 THE CAT-CRAZY COUPLE "HYPOCRITES. All of you". Grinning from ear to ear, civil servant Shaidatul Akmar points an accusing finger at the one, two, three, four, five, six cats skulking about his little apartment. "You especially. Come here, sayang", he says, picking up a sleek blue-eyed, white-haired feline. The cat allows him the pleasure of stroking her fur. When he went to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) to choose a cat last September, Whitty had been the first one to come up to him and rub herself against his leg. He was "fooled" by the gesture, and took her in immediately. After Whitty, a craze overtook him and his then-fiance, now-wife Maimoonah Aid. They went on an adoption binge. Within two months, they had six cats. Babeh (a variation of 'baby'), Shaidatul's favorite, was picked up at their apartment lift. A bengal cat, Berg, was the only one they bought. The rest - Whitty, Ginger, Moni and Tabby - were from the SPCA. "All of them are clever actors. At first they make you feel you're the king. Now, at home, they're the ones giving the orders!". The couple, who married last November, reels off their cats' various quirks. Whitty will only eat kibbles if it is mixed with ikan bilis. She has to have a separate plate. Berg has a sensitive stomach, so he can't eat too much wet food. He is hyperactive and the fastest runner. Unfortunately, says Shaidatul, he has no brakes. "Berg runs and slides all over the place. He broke our wedding vase, you know". Moni, whose life revolves around 'makan, tidur, makan, tidur' (eat, sleep, eat sleep), will wolf down his food then attack shy Ginger's. So they have to ward off the oversized bully. Despite having numerous scratching posts, the cats prefer sharpening their claws on the couch. Shaidatul has to vacuum the apartment every day and bathing them is a full-scale operation. They spend hundreds of ringgit on top-grade cat food and kitty liter. The couple even shares their bed with their meowing brood. Maimoonah is cat crazy, particularly about marble-coated Tabby. But what if she were not, Shaidatul? As he thoughtfully tousles Ginger's fur, he says: "Well, all I can say is, thank God she loves cats. If not, I don't know what I would do". KING OF THE HOUSE TUMNUS is obsessive about his drinking water. He closely inspects his drinking dish before taking a lick. If there's even a single particle visible in it, he refuses to lap up. Instead, he walks off to the kitchen, jumps onto the counter and meows loudly. When someone does come along, he glares at them as if to say: "You're late. What took you so long?" "And if we still don' t do anything, he goes and drinks water from puddles in the bathroom. He knows we hate that", says owner Dr Nazarina Abdul Rahman. Nazarina close Tumnus with her children, Daniel and Dania, 1½ years ago from the SPCA. From a little kitten, they fed and pampered him into a lovable five kilogramme ball of fur. Water isn't the only thing this cat is quirky about. He's has serious issues with tissue rolls. If he ever gets his paws on one, he won't rest until the entire length is unrolled into what Nazarina calls "his own manner". "Last weekend, I accidentally left one roll out and took a nap. When I woke up, my room was filled with tissue paper. Here, there, everywhere! All scratched up!" And what mode of discipline did she employ? "I gave him a few whacks on his bum-bum. Then I quickly kissed him, because he looked so sad". Tumnus, named after the lovable faun in The Chronicles of Narnia, pretty much does as he pleases. He won't come if he's called unless it suits him. He doesn't eat unless he feels like it. And as photographer Abd Rahim Rahmat found out, he doesn't pose for a picture if he's not in the mood. Although the family did their best to coax him to pose, Tumnus insisted on falling asleep. He struggled to get away, and finally streaked off into the bushes. "Don't worry. He's a scaredy-cat. He always comes back before long". "He doesn't have any friends except one teenage feline from next door. Whenever a male cat comes by, he makes a drama of hissing. Then he turns and runs helter-skelter". Shaidatul and Dr Nazarina are among the many proud new 'parents' who have adopted cats from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. They and three other families were selected to receive a one-year supply of Whiskas new dry cat food formula

everytime i read this kind of stories..I keep on asking myself...'How could their previous no-hearted owner do this to them?'...
This kind of stories encourage me to keep on telling people 'why they need to neuter/spay their cats and ofcourse adopt them!'... |
