Default Welfare and sales

I'd be most interested in the Malaysian (Singaporean, whatever) outlook on the exporting of kittens in bulk to your part of the world. I have to admit I have a huge problem with it, but am open to suggestion from you, on the ground, so to speak. You'd see and know more than we do here.

Many Aussie breeders are appalled at the bulk freighting of kittens (say - 12 or 15 at a time) by "agents" (some of whom are breeders, themselves) to middlemen (in most cases, pet shops) in S E Asian destinations. Typically, these kittens are not registered (because then the governing body in question would know about this "traffic") and come at best with a breeder's ped or or one with names blanked out. My personal observation of 7 - 8 mth kits (and sometimes adults) in pet shops indicates that they've been living in very confined areas for a LONG time. Some are better socialised than others, but many show signs of disease. Do the breeders in Aus care what happens once they've got their $$$ from the agent??? I don't think so! And the crazy thing is the prices asked - mega bucks.... usually more simply because they're imported.

Merely because most "end buyers" are not alert of the necessary documents/cert. that should be accompanyied with the purchase of specified kittens/puppys. Also to reconize the geniune of the cert. is already another issue here for the buyers. At most times the pet shops will reason the matter by saying the cert. will be supplied later........and the later never comes either....

To solve the problem will certainly not be a "one man show". Feedbacks from end buyers will be very good but then again we always have to start from awareness first for the public eyes to see what's important and then redirect them back to a correct channel/centre for the report of such cases.(ie : email address) and last but not least- time to time basis checks at pet shops by the authority concern. Perhaps for a start even the Aussie embassy could play a role to this problem........maybe?

A friend of mine purchased an Australian Shetland puppy abt a year +. At the price of RM2400 from a well know Pet Shop at K.L. and the pet shop agree to supply the cert. After a year passed and the cert. never was able to be supplied by the pet shop and when the matter was taken to consumer court, the pet shop agree to refund the purchase amount of RM2400 to the owner and requested the return of the dog to the pet shop again. After a year of bonding with the puppy, the pet shop knows very well that the owner will not want to return the doggie..... A smart way of the pet shop to cheat buyers....... Now, the dog is still with the owner (my friend) and the case still hanging in the air... (I will post a pic. tomorrow of these beautiful doggie for u to see )

Lesley, I am someone who is not into buying pedigree pets as I do wish to help the strays more. I don't face much of these problems but then again I do not want others to be cheated either. And most importanly I don't want to see innocent animals to be a victim from all these.

hi lesley and suzy,

trafficking and selling these wonderful felines like what u guys discussed about is really GROSS! its not that i'm against breeding - i love cats and kittens and also dogs and puppies (even though scared of canines). it just like doing improper selling of animals seems like the equivalent of human trafficking.

what the gov do when they discover bad people kidnap and sell babies? catch them and send to court right? aren't these felines and canines our babies too?

however, proper breeders shouldn't get offended from what i say. even a human will screen potential adopter for their own babies should they can't afford them. so, its the best way to get our felines and canines the best homes, screen the potential adoptee / buyer! we all want the best for our babies

p/s : poor kitties and doggies i know what you feel. my mom was given away coz her family too poor to afford her...
