PS – Buyers, do not use my statement to find fault with breeders lah. But it is important to show our cats to see the quality that we have vs what we have been told..

Chewie is a 6-mth old Persian X, so I'm thinking about the non-ped category. But from your response, I somehow can't imagine Chewie as a show cat. He doesn't strut his stuff and is a complete slob! He's an indoor/outdoor cat and my job everyday is to pick the dried leaves and lil branches off his fur But as far as I can see, he's cool with other cats. He'll hi-5 stray cats and invite them in for tea I'll give this show a miss and try to train him. See how he reacts to that!! |

Just to refresh the idea on why we need to show our cats…
Personally, I think, its human nature that loves to show or “show-off”. Every one of us likes to ‘show’ their cats…regardless of pedigree or non-pedigree… simply because all cats are cute and unique. And especially when we think that we have a good and beautiful cat. But the way we ‘show’ may vary between each others. Some of us like to ‘show’ their cats to the friend, some of us like to ‘show’ their cats’ pictures in the forum and some of us like to show their cats in cat competition. But we cannot deny the fact that we love to show OR show-off our cats. The good thing about showing our cat is – we will always make sure our cats are in their best condition before showing them to anybody. To me, the best way to show our cats is to show them in any cat competition. Simply because, we show them to the professionals who will use their professional skill & knowledge to evaluate our cats’ conditions. Their expert opinion on our cats is really worth it. If you are a breeder or plan to become a breeder, you (almost) cannot avoid cat show. It’s a common knowledge everywhere that a good responsible/reputable breeder will always show their cats. NOT to gain any popularity or glamour BUT you’re oblige to proof your breeding program…where it’s leading to. That’s why it’s not that easy to become a good breeder – you are not only required to have good breeding cats, but also money to regularly show your cats anywhere. Obviously, breeding is not a good “business”, if you’re thinking of making profit. Breeding needs a lot of investment (in term of money and time) and you can never think of making profit out of it. Actually, breeding and showing is all about love and passion. SO, just don’t blame or curse any breeders who actively show their cats, because they have concrete reasons to do so. BUT you may ask or even criticize any breeders who never show their cat... If you’re not a breeder OR if you never show cats – you will never know & understand why they dare to spend thousands of dollars for breeding and showing. And you’re NOT fit to give any comments on their spending. Be in their/our shoes…then you will probably know why. To be continued….. ![]()

Catizzadi, well said & i fully agreed.
Well, from my own experience, juz to simplify this, I've come across breeders who actually claimed that their kittens are from "champion bloodlines" watsoever, but in actual facts, they are not! Of course, if you are paying for a champion bloodlines, YOU OUGHT TO GET A CHAMPION BLOODLINE! To me, these breeders honesty are being questioned. I've also bought kittens from breeders who claimed that their kittens are well socialized and healthy, but in actual fact, as soon as i brought the kitten home, it got very sick. Don't get me wrong! Although thousands of dollars are spent (to purchase & to treat my cat), I'm not questioning about the championship or the $ spent but more of the breeders' honesty and credibility. well, my cat's fully recovered now.I've loved my cat more than words can say. but to all breeders out there, pls be honest about YOURSELF, YOUR CATS and YOUR CATTERY. its not juz the issue of profit here. Public would soon found out about the truth. DON'T DESTROY YOUR OWN REPUTATION! Having said this, I've recently got a cat from Europe. In terms of $, sure it cost a lot more. but listen to this, even before the cat was shipped to me till the day i receive him, he's in very SOUND condition. Up to my expectations. Very healthy, very handsome, fully conform to the CFA requirements and most importantly, comes with a HEALTH WARRANTY! And the breeder would call me once in a while just to check on my kittens' condition! (just like after-sales service ... haha) To all those who wish to purchase a kitten from a breeder or anywhere else, i would sincerely advise to do their own research on the cat's breed, the breeders' cattery and most importantly, the BREEDER'S CREDIBILITY. juz my 2 cents. ![]() |

yes..i believed in relationship..not just buy then gone...
i always make friends with my future breeder..get to know both them and their cats better..after i'm satisfied, then i would approach to own his/her cats.. after that..i will still create a good relationship with my breeder...usually they will guide me if i need assistance..learning process never ends.. why i show? erm..i believe showing is where i can get comments about my cats from judges..and futhermore, it where i can make friends with other breeders..ofcourse, i cannot afford to own all the breeds..so, i will get to know about the other breeds through other breeders. i never put winning as priority although i'm looking forward to achieved the highest achievement my cats can get. I never felt dissapointed if i lose...giving the though competition all that counts!. so..see ya at the show hall!! |

Very well said indeed. I personally believe tat before u even became a breeder, u always have to start with becoming a cat's owner first. Along the way, I've met countless no. of breeders and I've learnt that not all those breeders are in this field for the right reasons. I am a cat owner at present (surely a cat lover) but an aspiring breeder. All this time, I am in the learning process of recognising the breed tat i intend to produce. I'm sure in M'sia itself, there are countless of registered cat breeders (lets not talk abt unlicensed breeders), however only a handful of them are honest, responsible, sincere and of course, possessed a true sense of love to the breed. I am saying this on a personal account.
So to all breeders out there, wishing you all the best and stay HONEST, RESPONSIBLE & SINCERE. Only then u can be happy, successful and contented breeder. Have a good day. ![]() |

I hv seen numerous time non breeders & non show exhibitors criticize breeder who show their cats which is to show how little they know abt cat showing. If money is issues to show your cat then don’t even consider breeding like what Catizzadi had said, it’s a bad business. Don’t blame anyone for what you can’t afford.
Show hall can be a good place to identify a good breeder & to see in real what it standard shud conform to. On the other hand just don’t think you hv found a good breeder there but do a check on the one you hv identify before going into buying any cat from he/she. ![]() 2005-2006 International Division Asia/Latin America Best of Breed Maine Coon GC,Himedaruma Mt Takao of Felis Wonder (Best Maine Coon) GC.Embellie Nuage of Felis Wonder (2nd Best Maine Coon) 7 Grands & still counting |

Although I'm not a breeder but intend to be one in time to come, I have been to numerous cat shows. My main objective was to get to know those breeders which are breeding my preferred breed. At the same time, i have the intention to purchase from them.
The saddest thing is tat i have encountered a very unpleasant experience, not once but twice, with the same breeder. Supposely "ONCE BITTEN, TWICE SHY". But i was just giving tat breeder a 2nd chance and try to take into account tat it is human to err. however, he still doesnt learnt. Whether Europe, Australia, Japan or even M'sia, it doesnt really matter. The most impt aspect is tat A BREEDER HAS TO BE HONEST, RESPONSIBLE, SINCERE! tats all the customers are asking for. |

What you did is right, attending cat show to see your prefer breed & getting to meet the breeder but too bad that you hv such bad experience. True but sad that there will be irresponsible, dishonest & unethical breeder taking advantage of innocent naive buyer, hope this will not turn away ppl in the cat fancy. Maybe you shud consider enrolling yrself in our clerking school in Nov to hv a better understanding of the show mechanicism, it's good for exhibitor or breeder who show to know exactly how the show goes. ![]() 2005-2006 International Division Asia/Latin America Best of Breed Maine Coon GC,Himedaruma Mt Takao of Felis Wonder (Best Maine Coon) GC.Embellie Nuage of Felis Wonder (2nd Best Maine Coon) 7 Grands & still counting |

Coony, I'm glad u understand my predicament. It was a horrifying experience for me. At that point in time, I had no knowledge of the breed tat i was interested in. But I must say, sincerely, tat u r one of the breeders with good reputation and credibility! Supported by sufficient experience in breeding. Why I'm saying this is becos, I have who friend who is a Siberian Breeder, and I was told to look out for your cattery, should I intend to purchase tat particular breed of kitten. I did enquire from you quite some time ago, whether you have kittens available. Having said this, I did not regret what I went through with tat previous breeder. It was an eye-opening experience for me and it was a great learning process. There will always be dishonest & unethical breeders out there who are taking advantage of naive buyers who have none or little knowledge about a particular breed that they are purchasing. I have nothing against M'sian breeders or any breeders around the world. It's just that the breeders' reputation and credibility that I'm questioning. Nothing's gonna stop me from venturing into the cat fancy world. I would love to attend the clerking school. Any details? ![]() |
