I havent been to this forum for quite some time.....so Hi again.
Back to my title. I've been browsing through the treads and noticed that TNR seems so be in the latino heat topic. I've been doing TNR in my neighbourhood for quite some time but has recently stopped. Let me tell you why... I saw an obvious drop is cat population. However my worries were the increased number of RATs in the neighbourhood. Then i stopped TNR until i find an answer to my questions. My QUESTIONS. ...Is TNR necessary? ...Is that the wisest option we human can think? ...Is there other ways apart from TNR? ...Are we disrupting nature? ...Should I continue with TNR? Please offer your opinion...be it positive or negative. ![]()

A neutered cat can still catch rats mah....
And you do know in Boleh land many prefer not to neuter cats so they get a chance to dump them near kedai makan....so the population of cats will not decrease so soon even if you and i do the TNR.... Ok, the area was rat free.....and didn't have as much rats as near your house is it then ok to TNR... How often a RaT get splash with hot water compare to cats and dogs ? So we settle the rat problem, after we settle cat and dog problem.

Truth be told, there IS a need for TNR. However, there are some things I have gleaned from a lot of reading:
1. Do females first. Harder for sure, due to increased cost and recuperation time. 2. Do NOT spay a pregnant stray female, allow her to give birth and then spay sooner rather than later. 3. Catching males are harder. Basic assumptions will always hold more or less true - humans will continue to breed domestics, therefore, there will always be a stray cat population. I very frankly doubt that Malaysia will ever enter a stray free population and yes, we do need our ferals and strays to take care of the rat business!

rat is more of domestic thrash problem.
when we sort our domestic waste properly we can solved any rats, cockroach and anything else issue. near my place there's some illegal eateries that breed cat sized rat which i dont think any cat would want to give a chaser and i see the only solutions is to "neutered" the business there. oh but it is impossible since that place is protected by politician.

Absolutely!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And boy, how some do........those with their freedom, that is, like TNR cats. My guys when they're up on the tennis court from time to time grab a rat...........they come for fallen walnuts in winter..........let me tell you, having no balls nor ovaries doesn't stop a cat obeying basic instincts!

Stray dogs also hunt rats so TNR is still neccessary. Seeing kittens die like flies is harder on me than disposing of my rubbish in a trash can. Malaysians need to learn a few basic things.

Perhaps cats/kittens meant for home pets should be neutered/spayed but the stray ones should be left alone? No matter how hard i care for them i still see them get killed or rather the life span is so much shorter....Plus the neutered ones once died wont have anymore replacement to do the rat catching service.
And for obvious reasons i cannot keep on taking in all the strays....eventually i wont have anymore space.

Actually........the world shouldn't have strays. The whole idea of TNR is to reduce the stray population.......because of the hell they have to go thru' as strays living on scraps, beaten/ill treated..... ....seriously in a country like ours rodents problems shld not be let to hands of cats to take care. Unless we are living century back and yes, we will have to depend on cats to take care of rodents.

darling, when you run out of strays, I'll gladly send you some from here.
![]() i think the likelihood of stray animals disappearing is very very slim. that scenario would involve a global shift in mindset in animal welfare/care (i.e no dumping and no unplanned breedings) AND policies on neutering. this is a good topic for debate though.

no offense, but i think cats love, enjoy, delight in hunting. while i don't recommend on us relying on them as rodent control, we still need to recognise their inherent and supreme hunting instincts. the happiest cats are cats that we allow to BE cats.
