Default How to hairdrier a cat?

Today is the first encounter to a hairdrier for my Maya Karin. As expected, she freaked out!!! like ol' malay said "macam nampak hantu". Any tips? She is already 5 month old... is it too late to get her used to a hairdrier ?

Default hairdyring your cat!

Linuxlah,

As i had promised you that i'll be showing you how to blow dry your cat, well, i can't really show you (the pictures) today coz its raining and I will most probably only be showering them tomorrow.

However, for your info, this is how I do it.

1. after showering the cat, dry the cat with towel,

2. Use another dry towel to rub the cat when you are blow drying them.(so that the wet towel won't wet the part u had dried already. the towel also serves as protection against the cat's claws!)

3. get a harness(ref. 0.01.) not the Colar type~! the one that has two straps tying across the chest of the cat and behind the cats' front legs.

4. after having put on the harness(ref.0.02) , tie the end to a door knob so that the cat can only run in circles (it should be tied to a firm place as the cat may use all its force to break free from the harness)

5. After all that has been done, start blowing. As you blow dry them you need to run your fingers or a comb over the hair. This is to disperse the water sticking at the fur quickly and it will also help in fluffing up the cat.

6. if u are not using the Big hair dryer with cool air~, use medium hot air to blow dry, and consistantly move the dyer around.(!! DO NOT FOCUS ON A SPOT FOR TOO LONG! its HOT!)

* If your cat is a long hair cat, make sure u dry them totally ie to the root and not just the outer hair only.

I hope this help

Goodie Evening...

Erm, I tried hairdrying Angelo when he was younger. I think just a couple of months. When I turn on the hair dryer (low heat) he freak out and ran off. He was terrified of the sound. After that, I never tried it again. poor fella.

my friend's mum does it to all her persians. and they seem to enjoy it. Aunty will ask them to "golek left", "golek right", "tengah"..etc. Despite their sombong-ness, they actually listen to their mama and enjoy the hair dryer.

Now, I only bathe Angelo once every fortnight. I will need to check the weather. Make sure the sun is good. After I shower him, I towel-dry him as much as I can and put him in his cage (with water) and put him in a shade. Let the afternoon heat dry him up. Angelo is a DSH and it takes about 2hrs max to get him all warm and dry again. Of course I will reward him with some food and let him snooze off in my bed for the entire afternoon.

That harness thing, looks kinda scary ler.. if you want to put your cat in the harness you need to start right from the start. Otherwise, it is difficult to get them get used to it.

Any other good tips beside using the harness? how about keeping them in the toilet (or a small area) and hair dry them?

Just my 2cents worth. Hope it helps.

Cheerios Oreos.

Ginger,
My cats really hate the hairdryer.
I even wrap the noisiest pasrt with a cloth or unused sock to minimize sound but still these freakos freaked out.
So I gave up.. and relied on solar power and towel power. LOL

do u have balcony? if u do, put u cat in the show cage (very small cage) after shower and let them dry under the sun, what u can do it take a dryer and blow them fromk out side after some times they'll use to the sound... :P oh dun rub the towel on the skin/fur, it hurts, just press press press- tekan tekan the water to the towel...

Default i agree with the show cage

the harness sounds painful (to me maybe) it looks like the kitty is tied down.

i seriously dont have any trouble hairdrying munkie. i think the best way is to train the babies from very young. now, munkie just lies on my lap and is extremely cooperative. he even raises his legs and arms. the only place he doesnt like to be blowed is on his face.

but darn i wasnt so lucky with chokie. he would try to free himself at the smallest oppurtunity. so i would towel dry him, leave him in the cage for a few minutes to calm down (all this being done in the garden to make full use of the natural heat from the sunlight)then start to dry him with the hairdryer once he seems comfortable enuff. While drying, if the kitty is calm enuff, u can brush its fur too. this helps speed yup the drying rate to 50%!!

CHEERIOS!!

ps: be sure to get some dry towels for youself too.
